Hello! We are two adult ESL literacy teachers in the San Francisco Bay Area who have been adapting the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for our students – with success! We have built this website to share our developments with you.
The CCRS were developed for the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education to create bridges between adult education and post-secondary institutions as well as the working world. Developed by Susan Pimentel in 2013, the CCRS have been adopted by many adult schools throughout the nation. You can access the CCRS in their entirety by clicking here.
Our project is focused specifically on the English Language Arts and Literacy section within CCRS. It is divided into 5 strands:
- Reading Standards
- Writing Standards
- Speaking and Listening Standards
- Language Standards
- Foundational Skills
We believe that it is possible to scaffold academic and workplace skills into beginning classes and that doing this work eases transitions later on. Most importantly, we know that ESL literacy students are absolutely capable of performing 21st century skills which have been adapted to their level. As such, during the 2016-17 school year, we developed modifications for the Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening Standards. We did not address the Language and Foundations Skills sections because we believe most ESL Literacy teachers are already focused on those objectives.

Disclaimer: This project was a personal undertaking, which we produced in our spare time. We realize that the level of detail provided here assumes a certain level of teacher experience and may be difficult for a novice teacher. If you have specific questions about any of our lessons, we are happy to be contacted.
